Stoke’s Kevin Wimmer comments on upcoming clash with Tottenham

Kevin Wimmer joined Stoke City from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, and will face his old side in the Premier League this weekend.

Kevin Wimmer has told Stoke City’s official website that he is looking forward to coming up against his old side when the Potters travel to Wembley to face Tottenham at the weekend, but insisted that Spurs’ recent form will make it harder for Mark Hughes’ men.

Wimmer spent two years on Tottenham’s books, but generally struggled to force his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and ended up leaving for £18 million in the summer (via BBC Sport) having only made 15 Premier League appearances for the club.

This weekend will see Wimmer face his old side, and they will be hoping to compound the top flight misery for Tottenham, who have not won a league game in over a month – though there has been an international break since then. But, while the Austrian would be forgiven for being confident given Spurs’ form, he insisted that their recent woes will make it harder for the Potters.

“Of course, I am looking forward to the game, that is natural,” he told the club’s official website.

“Tottenham haven’t picked up as many points as you would expect them to normally, so that makes it more difficult now for us because they will be looking for the three points at home.”

“We have to be on top of our game, and defend well and make sure everyone is right up for the fight.”

“We have quality up front, especially on the counter-attack, so we are always sure that we can be a threat, and know that we can score at any time.”

It would be no surprise if Wimmer – if he does play – ends up enjoying a very busy afternoon on Saturday as a number of teams have looked to sit deep and frustrate Tottenham when they have travelled to Wembley.

And while some may worry for Spurs given that their recent form has left them so far off the pace-setters in the top flight, they still have plenty to fight for as they find themselves just four points off the top four currently.

And with many seemingly writing Tottenham off replicating their previous finishes in the league this term, it would be no surprise if Pochettino’s men were fully determined to prove a point and thus, make Wimmer’s return to the capital a very unhappy one.
