Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam has told BBC Radio Five Live that he would love to see Leeds United return to the Premier League this season.

The Whites beat Preston North End 3-0 at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon, remaining fifth in the Championship table but one step closer to securing a play-off place.

Having lost successive games against Reading and Brentford, Leeds needed a response against Preston, and got just what they wanted as goals from Kemar Roofe, Pablo Hernandez and Souleymane Doukara sealed a comfortable win.

Garry Monk’s side now lie five points inside the play-off places, and with just five games to go, it would take a surprising turn of results for Leeds not to be involved in the end-of-season promotion race.

Leeds haven’t been in a Championship play-off campaign since losing the 2006 final to Watford, but Monk now has Leeds vying for a return to the Premier League, 13 years since they were last seen in the top flight.

Leeds being promoted would be huge not only for the club, but also for English football, given the club’s history and reputation – and one Premier League midfielder is desperate to see them return to the big time.

Stoke City’s Charlie Adam has told BBC Radio Five Live that Leeds have been the biggest surprise in the Championship this season, and hailed manager Monk for his ‘incredible’ work at Elland Road.

Adam added that he would love to see Leeds win promotion so he can play at Elland Road – a particularly ironic comment given that ex-Leeds manager Neil Redfearn told Radio Yorkshire last year that he wanted to bring the Scottish midfielder to West Yorkshire had he kept his job.

“I think Leeds are the biggest surprise,” said Adam. “Garry Monk has done an incredible job there, and I would love to see them come up. At Elland Road, with the crowd and the fans, it would be amazing to be able to go there and play, and I would like to see them come up after the problems they’ve had over the last five or six years,” he added.
