Liam Lindsay has left Barnsley for Championship outfit Stoke City – but why weren’t Leeds United interested?

Leeds fans show their support prior to the Sky Bet Championship Play-off semi final second leg match between Leeds United and Derby County at Elland Road on May 15, 2019 in Leeds, England.

Leeds United collapsed towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign, throwing away any dreams of a return to the Premier League in the process.

And anyone who watched this car crash unfurl will tell you this much – another centre-back wouldn’t go amiss.

Yes, the brick-nutting Swede Pontus Jansson is a fans’ favourite but he’s erratic too. Liam Cooper, meanwhile, is never too far away from a horrific mistake. Gaetano Berardi appears to be injured most of the time while Aapo Halme and Connor Shaughnessy don’t seem to be part of Marcelo Bielsa’s plans right now.

So Liam Lindsay looked like a potentially inspired addition, either in the starting XI or as a reliable back-up option.

A confident and cultured defender who has shone a few miles down the road at Oakwell, Lindsay showcased his class and winning mentality in a Barnsley team who stormed back to the Championship last season.

Unfortunately, however, he’s just gone to Stoke City – for all of £2 million (Yorkshire Post).

And Leeds fans must be wondering why on earth they didn’t at least show the briefest flicker of interest in a player whose presence at the back and ability on the ball appeared to make him the perfect addition to Bielsa’s backline.

There won’t be many better options out there for such an affordable fee.
