Stoke City are reportedly keen to sign a proven Championship goalscorer with Premier League Newcastle United willing to sell Dwight Gayle.

Stoke City are interested in signing Dwight Gayle from Newcastle United this summer, according to The Sun (19 June, page 50) – though a proven Championship goalscorer will not come cheap.

The Potters were expected to storm the second tier last season so you can only imagine how disappointed the fans were when they finished all the way down in 17th place, failing to put together anything resembling a play-off challenge.

Considering that no one in Nathan Jones’ team scored more than eight Championship goals in 2018/19, it is pretty clear where Stoke need to strengthen. And they could hardly do much better than Gayle.

The Newcastle misfit plundered 24 goals in 34 starts during a loan spell at West Brom last season after all. And he fired The Magpies to the Championship title in 2017 thanks to 23 strikes in 26 starts.

According to The Standard, however, Newcastle want £20 million for the former Crystal Palace poacher, meaning Stoke will have to part with a club-record fee.

They are also facing a battle with Slaven Bilic’s West Brom, who have renewed their interest in signing Gayle on a permanent basis after initially fearing that they had been priced out.
