The tenacious forward is reportedly wanted by Burnley, but Newcastle United should join the party.
Dwight Gayle proved to be a superb signing for the Magpies, scoring 23 goals in 32 Championship outings during their promotion-winning campaign.
Rafa Benitez will undoubtedly have to bring in more forward options this summer, however, if he is to guide his side to a successful campaign in the top flight, and the addition of a hard-working striker to partner the 26-year-old Gayle will surely feature highly on the Spaniard’s wish-list.
With this in mind, Newcastle should consider making a move for Stoke City’s Jonathan Walters, who is a primary transfer target for Burnley, according to the Daily Mail.
The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international is renowned for his tireless work ethic, and tenacious playing style. He would be ideally suited to spearhead the Toon’s attack alongside Gayle.

Walters’ selfless running into the channels would drag opposing defenders out of position, and in turn, create more space for Gayle to flourish.
The former Crystal Palace hitman is at his best when operating in and around the 18-yard box, and the extra space that the Stoke man would create for him would surely see his productivity increase even further still.
Walters, who moved to the Potteries in the summer of 2010, and has established himself as a vital member of the Stoke side throughout that period.
He found his game-time limited last term, however, and is rumoured to be looking for a move away from the BET365 Stadium, in order to nail down more regular action.
And if Benitez manages to convince Walters into making the move to St James’ Park, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for the Tyneside outfit, as far as their hopes of avoiding the drop are concerned.
