Steve Bruce will have to make some seriously strong acquisitions this summer, if he is to guide his side back to the Premier League next season.

The Villans were woeful for the majority of the 2016/17 campaign, and despite the odd run of wins here and there, they lacked a certain level of passion, desire, will to win and commitment to the cause.

With this in mind, the addition of a tenacious midfielder will surely feature highly on Bruce’s wish-list, and an interesting option for them would be Stoke City’s Charlie Adam.

The left-footed 31-year-old is currently available on a free transfer, with his contract set to expire with the Potters this summer, although Mark Hughes does have the option of extending the Scot’s deal for another year.

Bruce should make a move for Adam, however, irrelevant to whether he is available on a free transfer or not.

The 26-capped Scotland international would be ideal for Villa, and would add a certain level of bite and aggression to their midfield, along with the vast array of passing skills he possesses.

He is highly experienced, and would play a key role in the Villans’ dressing room, helping guide the young group of players through the tricky times that will undoubtedly await them during the arduous Championship campaign.

Convincing the 31-year-old to drop down to the Championship could prove to be a stumbling block for Villa, although the guarantee of first-team football could help persuade Adam to make the move to Villa Park.
