Stoke City signed Jack Butland from Birmingham City back in 2013.
According to a report in the Telegraph, Stoke City will hold out for bids of over £50 million from Premier League sides for star player Jack Butland as the January transfer window draws nearer.
The report claims the England international is likely to be a transfer target for top-flight clubs when the window opens but Stoke have no financial obligation to sell and will look to keep hold of their prized asset.
Butland has over the past few seasons become one of England’s best goalkeepers and any potential sale is likely to eclipse the current British transfer record Everton paid to sign Jordan Pickford from Sunderland.
The Potters signed the shot-stopper from Birmingham City in a £4 million deal in 2013 (Guardian), taking advantage of the Blues’ then-financial issues to strike an absolute bargain.
Butland has always possessed great potential, but Birmingham perhaps underestimated just how good he could be and looking back they will no doubt regret not holding out for a higher fee.
The 25-year-old has managed to keep seven clean sheets for Stoke this season, with his excellent performances largely keeping Gary Rowett’s side in contention for a top six spot after a poor start to the campaign.
Butland may feel he stands a better chance of regaining his spot as England’s number one by moving back to the Premier League, but it remains to be seen whether any club will be willing to match Stoke’s enormous valuation of the player while his contract at the club doesn’t expire until the summer of 2021.
