Spurs made £18m when they sold Kevin Wimmer to Premier League rivals Stoke City in August.

Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to sell Kevin Wimmer to Stoke City in August left supporters divided. Yes, the Austrian had barely featured in 2016/17 and, yes, he earned Spurs a cool £18 million just two years after they paid Cologne almost a quarter of that fee, as reported by the BBC.
But Wimmer looked a defender of real class and potential during his first season at White Hart Lane, deputising for Jan Vertonghen during the spring and looking like an important future cog of this ever-improving Spurs machine.
Though based on his first few months as a Stoke player, it is remarkable that Wimmer ever turned out in a Tottenham shirt at all. Without doubt, he has been one of the most underwhelming signings of 2017/18.

And the disappointment has been amplified by the fact that only Gianni Imbula has cost more than Wimmer in Stoke’s history. For what it’s worth, Imbula was probably even worse.
So far, Wimmer has started 12 of Stoke’s 20 Premier League games and saved arguably his worst performance for their trip to his former club at the start of December. Spurs ran riot at Wembley, winning 5-1, with the 25-year-old all at sea throughout.

Suddenly, Spurs’ decision to cash in on Wimmer looks a good one. Especially as it’s safe to say Davinson Sanchez can be considered a rather substantial upgrade.
