Aston Villa boss Dean Smith had been keen to sign Jack Butland from Stoke City in the summer transfer window.

Stoke City fans have suggested that they should have sold Jack Butland to Aston Villa.
The Sun reported how Villa were keen to buy Butland for £20 million, but they couldn’t get a deal over the line.
Stoke were asking for big money for the England international, and Villa walked away from a potential transfer.
Dean Smith’s side went on to sign Tom Heaton, who made an encouraging debut for Villa against Tottenham Hotspur.
Butland’s form at Stoke, meanwhile, has been extremely poor in the opening two games of the season.
Butland has been at fault for at least two of the goals which Stoke have conceded already this term, with his performance in a defeat to Charlton Athletic at the weekend very poor.
And many Stoke fans are suggesting that Butland should have been sold while Villa were interested.
It seems highly unlikely that Villa will come back in for Butland any time soon.
Heaton may be 33, but it seems like he will be Dean Smith’s side’s number one for the foreseeable future, and Butland’s poor form is unlikely to be attracting any suitors to make a January bid.
