Jack Wilshere has told talkSPORT that Arsenal must continue to spend so Mikel Arteta has a deeper side, but is pleased the Gunners have signed Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

Jesus has moved to the Emirates Stadium on a five-year contract to help replace Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s presences. Arteta let the latter join Barcelona for free in January, while the former has re-joined Lyon five years after leaving for £46.5m.

Arsenal paid Manchester City £45m to sign Jesus, who has taken over the No.9 jersey from Lacazette. He will start the season as the Gunners’ main centre-forward with support from the club’s new No.14, Eddie Nketiah, after the Hale Ender agreed a new five-year contract.

Nketiah ended last season as the Gunners’ lead striker and finished strongly, with all five of the 23-year-old’s goals coming from the final seven of his 21 Premier League games. While Jesus offered Manchester City eight strikes and nine assists over 28 top-flight appearances.

Wilshere pleased with Jesus signing but Arsenal need further reinforcements

Arsenal pleased Wilshere by signing Jesus from Manchester City as the 25-year-old can be a solid striker for Arteta. But the midfielder feels his former side must continue working in the market so the Spaniard hits the season with a side able to compete in all competitions.

“They’ve done well, a few new signings,” Wilshere said. “The striker is a good one, Jesus. I still think they maybe need a few more because of Europe, just in general, to strengthen the squad. They might be fighting to get in the team, but they’ll strengthen the squad.”

Jesus marked Arsenal’s fourth transfer of the summer so far after signing Fabio Vieira from Porto, Marquinhos from Sao Paulo and Matt Turner from New England Revolution. Arteta, therefore, has multiple options in all positions, but remains eager to strengthen if possible.

Arsenal remain interested in Youri Tielemans and Ben Jacobs reports the Leicester City star will join if they bid. Fabrizio Romano also notes Arteta is eager to sign Ajax talent Lisandro Martinez, but the Daily Record claim the Argentine would rather join Manchester United.
