Tottenham Hotspur’s high defensive line against Chelsea continues to stun pundit Jamie Carragher, hours after the game finished.
Jamie Carragher has admitted that he can’t stop looking at a photo of Tottenham Hotspur’s high defensive line against Chelsea.
Chelsea and Tottenham have played out some chaotic games over the years; who can forget the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ back in 2016?
Monday’s encounter was something else though, with total mayhem ensuing throughout the latest Spurs v Chelsea clash.
Two red cards meant Spurs played for more than 40 minutes with nine men, eventually losing 4-1 to their London rivals.
Jamie Carragher still blown away by Tottenham Hotspur approach
Tottenham stunned many by sticking to their high-line principles even with nine men on the pitch.
That meant some bizarre moments when most of the Tottenham side were stationed on the halfway line, attempting to catch Chelsea offside.
Chelsea did get through at times without making Spurs pay before finally getting it right to make it 2-1.
One moment which really amused pundit Carragher saw seven Tottenham players across the halfway line with Marc Cucurella making a late run to try and beat the offside trap.
Cucurella did get in but Tottenham managed to deny a goal, playing a daring brand of football.
Carragher loved it and has now taken to social media to admit that he is ‘still buzzing’ after such a chaotic clash on Monday night.
Carragher added that he still can’t stop looking at the photo of Tottenham’s high line, nearly 12 hours since the game finished.
Why did Ange Postecoglou play such a high line?
The usual approach managers take when going a man – or two – down is to shut up shop, go into a low block and try to frustrate the opponents.
Ange Postecoglou went in completely the opposite direction, playing as high as he would with 11 players on the pitch.
The Australian wanted to stick to his principles; this comes from a belief that this is Tottenham’s identity now and players will buy in more if they see Postecoglou commit to one style rather than try to change Spurs in the face of adversity.
Some may call that naive, but Postecoglou is trying to build a culture at Tottenham and felt he was better served to play as he wants to going forward.
Postecoglou will cop some criticism for that approach but Tottenham supporters don’t seem too upset, seemingly understanding their manager’s mindset.
