Still a free agent: Would Leeds consider new move for Diego Polenta after alleged July snub?

Leeds United reportedly failed with a move for Diego Polenta in July.

It’s fair to say that Leeds United’s start under Marcelo Bielsa couldn’t have gone much better. The appointment of the Argentinian over the summer caused huge fanfare, with pundits and even neutrals excited to see ‘El Loco’ in England for the first time.

Bielsa hasn’t used the 3-3-1-3 system which he is famed for, but his side are flourishing in a 4-1-4-1 setup, with two outstanding Championship winds already under Bielsa’s belt.

After beating Stoke City 3-1 on the opening weekend, Leeds then went to Derby County on Saturday and picked up a thumping 4-1 win, with the Whites being hailed from all corners.

Everything may be going to plan for Leeds, but Bielsa has told Leeds Live that he wants one more signing before the end of the month, with Football League clubs still able to land loans and free agents.

A centre back appears to be the top target as the Yorkshire Evening Post report that another loan deal for Everton’s Matthew Pennington is being explored, but could Leeds still look back to another summer target for help?

Last month, Ovacion reported that Leeds had offered Diego Polenta a contract, but the Uruguayan rejected a move at the time, as he wasn’t convinced by a move to Elland Road.

Now, the 26-year-old remains a free agent, and with Telemundo Deportes in Mexico reporting that Atlas have rekindled their interest in Polenta having been snubbed last month, Leeds may be wise to at least explore something similar.

Technically proficient and capable of playing at centre back or left back, Polenta may not be a traditional centre back, but he fits Bielsa’s style of play and would give Bielsa another option at the back alongside Gaetano Berardi, Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson.

Being rejected once may leave Leeds feeling that they shouldn’t go back, but with Polenta still looking for a club – and able to sign permanently this month even after the closure of the transfer window – he should remain on Bielsa’s radar as a potential bargain signing.
