The former Villa captain trained with the club during the summer.

Former Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov supports the club’s decision to sack Roberto Di Matteo.
Villa are currently 19th in the Championship but speaking to Talksport on Monday, Petrov expressed his belief that the club’s summer business has led to a ‘very, very good team’ being created, and suggested what they need now is a manger who can get them to play.
“I would say they’ve done quite good business,” the Bulgarian told the Jim White show. “I think they have a very, very good team. It seems like just the manager couldn’t get them to play, to build them, to make the balance in the team, to make them play together.

“The chairman (Tony Xia) made a quick decision because he knows he needs somebody who can change this very quickly, because he wants this club to be back in the Premier League. We’ll wait and see who’s going to be the next (manager) and I hope he can do a better job.”
When asked if he could be the man to do it, Petrov, who spent seven years a Villa player, added: “I’ve always been honest with myself and I know that I’m not ready for that job. I know I will become (manager) one day but it’s too early for me.”

Petrov’s comments are particularly intriguing given the fact he trained with his old side during pre-season, only to be informed he would not be offered a permanent contract at Villa Park.
The 37-year-old retired from the game in 2013, having been diagnosed with acute leukemia a year earlier, but has since made a full recovery and told the BBC in April he was keen to play high-level football again.
He was recently offered a player-coach role at non-league Nuneaton Town, but opted to turn it down.
