The USA international was not pleased when club icon Petrov did not get a new deal at Aston Villa.
Aston Villa – Brad Guzan
Yesterday saw former Aston Villa legend Stiliyan Petrov comment on why he failed to earn a deal with the club in the summer.
The Bulgarian, who was training with Aston Villa after recovering from leukaemia, had hoped to earn a deal at the club – but was then told he would not be offered a playing contract at Villa Park
On talkSPORT yesterday (15/09/16) he explained how one former Aston Villa player reacted when he told him of how he would not be getting a deal.
Stiliyan Petrov – Aston Villa
The player in question was Brad Guzan.
Here is what Petrov had to say about his exchange with the American goalie this summer:
“I remember Brad Guzan.
“He came up to me after training and said ‘It looks like you’re going to make it.’
“Then I have turned around and said ‘I don’t think I’ll make it’. He said ‘Why’s that?’
“I told him that I wouldn’t get anything and he literally went ballistic about it.
“But I said to him ‘that is football.’”
Middlesbrough’s Brad Guzan
Guzan is of course no longer a Villa player. After two poor seasons at the club he was sold this summer, joining newly promoted Middlesbrough.
He himself was once released by Aston Villa, only to be reinstated to the first-team back in 2012 – so knows something about the poor handling Aston Villa are often guilty of.
Petrov it seems was simply not what Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo was after, with sentiment left firmly at the door.
But it would also appear that those he was training with were surprised by the decision.
