Petrov has reportedly applied to replace Steve Bruce at Villa.
Stiliyan Petrov has reportedly applied to become the next Aston Villa manager and his comments to TalkSPORT about the vacant role from 2016 are now more poignant than ever.
Birmingham Live reported earlier this week that the former Villa midfielder, 39, who spent seven years at Villa Park as a player between 2006 and 2013, had sent in an application after Steve Bruce was given his marching orders.
Bruce suffered the sack after Villa drew 3-3 against Preston with Glenn Whelan missing an injury-time penalty to win the match. The club have since suffered a 2-1 defeat to Millwall at The Den on Saturday.
With the international break in full flow, Villa will be looking to appoint Bruce’s replacement before the next outing against Swansea City on October 20. Petrov’s comments after Roberto Di Matteo’s sacking in 2016, are now very relevant.
“I know one day I will become [Villa manager], but it is way too early for me,” Petrov told TalkSPORT in 2016. “They need a good manager, an experienced manager, who can bring stability to the club.”
Petrov is said to have applied but he remains behind the likes of John Terry, Thierry Henry and Rui Faria, who remain the front runners to take over from Bruce. Petrov is way out at 40/1 with Sky Bet.
The 105-time Bulgaria international has worked in the coaching set-up at Aston Villa since his retirement, alongside Under-23 manager Gordon Cowans in 2013. He played over 200 times for the Midlands outfit.
