Alan Hutton is one of the best players in the Championship, and there was no surprise to see Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers and Aitor Karanka’s Nottingham Forest linked with the Aston Villa star before he signed a new contract with the Villans.

Earlier this month, The Birmingham Mail reported that returning to Rangers was an option for Hutton, as his (previous) contract with Villa was coming to an end.

The 33-year-old right-back started his professional club football career at Rangers and played for the Gers until 2008 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur.

According to The Nottingham Post, Forest wanted to sign Hutton on a free transfer, with Karanka’s side having offered him a two-year deal.

The Scottish right-back has committed his future to Villa by signing a new one-year contract with the Championship club.

Former Celtic and Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has congratulated Hutton on social networking site Twitter on signing a new contract with the Villans, and believes that the ex-Rangers and Tottenham right-back deserves it.
