The Bulgarian says it has been painful watching Villa recently.
Stiliyan Petrov – Aston Villa
Aston Villa once again came up short in pursuit of what be only a second Championship win this season last night.
Jonathan Kodjia’s excellent goal in the 19th minute was cancelled out by Brentford’s John Egan in the 88th minute as they conceded their second consecutive late equaliser following Henri Lansbury’s effort for Nottingham Forest last weekend.
The result leaves Villa 17th in the Championship, despite keeping many of their Premier League stars and making some big signings this summer.

Stiliyan Petrov, who was not offered a contract with the club after spending pre-season with the club, is considered a legend at Villa Park.
The Bulgarian was speaking to talkSPORT (15/09/16) about the performances of Villa this season and admitted it has been painful:
“It’s been painful so far to watch them this season, it’s been painful to watch them for the last four years.
“It has been a little bit disappointing. They’ve got a long way to go but there is a lot to put right to make sure they can make that Premier League again.”
Aston Villa’s Mile Jedinak looks dejected after the game
When asked if he thought that Villa could get promoted this season, he was blunt about their current chances:
“The way they’ve started, at the moment, no (I don’t think they’ll get promoted).
“I hope they do. They’ve got some good players. I don’t think the manager has got the right balance yet.”
Petrov is clearly not of the persuasion that Villa are currently in any place to fight for promotion – despite the talent available to manager Roberto Di Matteo.
At the moment, that is probably the same thinking as most Aston Villa fans.
