Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace have been suspended at Ibrox after an altercation with Rangers manager Graeme Murty.
Former Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has told the Scottish Herald that Old Firm rivals Rangers need to keep Kenny Miller as he is the closest equivalent to Hoops captain Scott Brown that the Gers have.
Reports suggest Miller, 38, has played his last game for Rangers after he and captain Lee Wallace were suspended following a dressing-room altercation after the 4-0 loss to Celtic on Sunday in the Scottish Cup semi-final.
With his suspension indefinite, Miller is running out of time at Ibrox as his current contract ends in less than two months. It remains to be seen if he will indeed be offered a new deal, but following Tuesday’s events, it seems unlikely.
Petrov, who turned out for Celtic for seven years between 1999 and 2006, urged the Gers board to keep their eldest player as he is the only kind of player who can offer leadership at Ibrox in a way that Brown does at Celtic.
“I would keep guys like Kenny because they know how to lead and can explain what Rangers is all about,” Petrov said. “You need guys like that.
“Celtic have that with Scott Brown. When I was there, we had Tommy Burns, Mr Celtic. Every game, he would tell us how important it was, what it means to the fans, what they’ll do if we win or lose. Every single day.”
Miller was left on the bench by manager Graeme Murty during the heavy loss to Celtic, despite scoring in the previous game in a 4-0 win over Dundee.
The former Scotland international, who has also played for Celtic throughout his career, has played 23 times this season with a ruptured hamstring preventing him from taking to the field between December and March.
