Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack featured at right-back for Scotland against Netherlands on Thursday night.
The 25-year-old was used as a makeshift defender for the night by interim Scotland manager Malky Mackay, as his side lost 1-0 to the Netherlands at Pittodrie thanks to a Memphis Depay at the end of the first half.
Rangers’ number eight usually operates at the base of a midfield, in between the defence and the attacking midfielders in order to prove an extra layer of protection.
However, he was used out of position on the right side of defence against the Dutch and former Hibernian and Hearts midfielder Stewart claimed he is “not a future right-back” before stating Cardiff City’s Callum Paterson is a better option.
Former Manchester United winger Depay scored the all-important goal at Aberdeen’s home ground, tapping in from close range after Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum drove from midfield to find ex-Reds winger Ryan Babel who crossed.
It remains to be seen if Jack will be called up again by the Scotland national side, with caretaker boss Mackay likely to be replaced by another manager on a full-time basis before the nation’s next outing.
