Stewart Robson isn’t Tottenham Hotspur man Jan Vertonghen’s biggest fan.

(L-R) Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur warm up prior to kickoff during the Barclays Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion at...

Stewart Robson has told ESPN that Tottenham Hotspur’s defence is being exposed by the loss of Toby Alderweireld.

Spurs have managed to win only one of the five Premier League games they have had since the big Belgian was ruled out until the new year with a hamstring injury.

In that time, Tottenham have conceded six times and such a poor run of form has seen manager Mauricio Pochettino publicly admit that his side’s titles chances are effectively gone.

Toby Alderweireld (center #4) is congratulated by his Tottenham Hotspur teammates after scoring the game-winning goal against Paris Saint-Germain during the second half of their...

The Lilywhites had the best defence in the Premier League last season after Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Eric Dier formed a superb back three which only conceded 26 times in 38 games.

But former Arsenal defender Robson feels that Vertonghen isn’t a strong enough centre-back to keep the defence together without his compatriot there beside him.

Toby Alderweireld #4 of Tottenham Hotspur passes the ball in the second half against Roma during the International Champions Cup on July 25, 2017 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

He told ESPN: “Alderweireld not playing is a big blow. I think he’s their best centre-half by far.

“Sanchez has done well since he’s come in. I’m not a big fan of Vertonghen but they’ve had a great defensive record and it was being held together by Alderweireld.”

Vertonghen is a fine defender but fans of the North London might agree that he has suffered in the absence of the former Atletico Madrid star.

Pochettino’s side are certainly in something of a funk and with Alderweireld not back until January, it could get a lot worse for Tottenham over the rigourous festive period.
