Sunderland are reportedly looking to sign Will Grigg from Wigan.
Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has teased fans on Twitter over the potential signing of Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg, after reports suggested the League One club want to sign the Northern Ireland striker.
The Daily Mail claimed in Tuesday’s paper edition (Page 72) that Sunderland wanted to sign 27-year-old Grigg, who is struggling for regular game time at Championship outfit Wigan.
Grigg has managed just 10 Championship starts for Paul Cook’s side this season, as well as coming on as a substitute sic times. He has scored four goals in the second tier of English football.
But he is likely to remain frustrated at the DW Stadium, after his goals pushed Wigan towards promotion from League One last season – where he scored 19 in the third tier. Donald teased Sunderland fans on Twitter over a move for Grigg.
A 13-time Northern Ireland international, Grigg has played in the third tier for the majority of his career. His stats are certainly eye-catching, with 96 career goals in 260 League One appearances.
Sunderland are certainly in need of a striker, with Jerome Sinclair struggling at the Stadium of Light. Duncan Watmore is still on the road to recovery, while Charlie Wyke himself has only just regained fitness.
The contract saga of Josh Maja remains ongoing, though the teenager’s future is likely to be elsewhere than Wearside. A new striker is needed, and Donald’s Tweet suggests that perhaps Grigg could be that man.
