Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has suggested to Roker Report that Lee Cattermole will not leave the Black Cats in the January transfer window.

Cattermole was linked with a move away from Sunderland in the summer transfer window.

A report in The Guardian in August claimed that French club Bordeaux want to sign the 30-year-old defensive midfielder from the Black Cats.

Nothing materialised, and the former Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic star remained at Sunderland and is now playing quite well for Jack Ross’s side.

Sunderland owner Donald has praised the attitude of Cattermole, and has suggested that the Englishman will not leave the Black Cats in the January transfer window.

Donald told Roker Report about Cattermole: “Lee has been absolutely professional and he has been enjoying it I think.

“I think Lee would like to stay at the football club and I think Lee has been really enjoying playing for Jack.

“That is a positive for Lee Cattermole and it’s a positive for the team as he’s done fantastically well.

“He’s given 100% and when you watch him, you want him to do well and the fans have got behind him.”

Sunderland stay

Cattermole is arguably the best defensive midfielder in League One, and him staying at the Stadium of Light this season will enhance Sunderland’s chances of winning automatic promotion to the Championship.

The midfielder has has been on the books of Sunderland since the summer of 2009 when he joined from Wigan Athletic for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £6 million.

Sunderland are fourth in the League One table at the moment with 15 points from seven matches.
