Stewart Donald responds after Sunderland fan calls him out about lack of summer spending

Sunderland have signed a trio of free agents so far.

New owner Stewart Donald has told Sunderland fans concerned about their side’s budget to look at rivals Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth first.

Donald suggested after taking control at the Stadium of Light that Sunderland would have a ‘playing budget’ of more than £20 million – something he maintained when questioned on Twitter this morning.

It comes after the Mackems completed the signings of Jon McLaughlin (pictured, top) and Chris Maguire (pictured, above) in quick succession on Monday, although they have yet to spend a transfer fee on any of their three summer recruits – the other one being Alim Ozturk.

It is perhaps worth noting that the reigning League One champions, Wigan Athletic, failed to pay a single transfer fee during last summer’s transfer window.

And while Sunderland may appear to be taking things steady, they are expected to boost their coffers over the coming two months by selling off several top earners.
