Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has suggested to Roker Rapport that the club plan to extend the contracts of George Honeyman, Lynden Gooch, Bali Mumba and Josh Maja.

Midfielder Honeyman, 24, 22-year-old midfielder Gooch, 16-year-old midfielder Mumba and 19-year-old forward Maja all are out of contract at Sunderland next summer.

Honeyman, Gooch and Maja are important players in Jack Ross’s first team, while teenager Mumba is still a scholar and has yet to sign his first professional contract, according to The Chronicle.

Donald told Roker Rapport: “I hope that all the ones you have mentioned (Maja, Gooch, Honeyman, Mumba) sign extensions but at the same time we have to work hard to reduce our wage bill.”

Good plan?

Honeyman, Gooch, Mumba and Maja all are talented and promising young players, and it would make sense for Sunderland to hand them new contracts.

The Black Cats are playing in League One at the moment, and they should get promoted to the Championship at the end of the season.

The likes of Honeyman and Maja are important for Sunderland not only for this season, but also for years to come.

Sunderland are fourth in the League One table at the moment with 15 points from seven matches, four points behind leaders Peterborough United.
