Stewart Donald has revealed his intention to have more new signings in place by the time Sunderland play Grimsby Town a week today (Tuesday).

The Sunderland owner was speaking on Twitter ahead of his side’s friendly at Darlington this evening, which he cannot attend.

But the Oxfordshire businessman, who took the reins on Wearside in May, said he is looking forward to the trip to Blundell Park.

“Good luck @SunderlandAFC tonight,” he wrote. “Sorry I can’t b there but looking 4ward to making Grimsby (with some new signings). Atmosphere & attitude has been 1st class by all the lads in the squad tonight. Fans will be there in numbers to get behind every single player. The journey begins.”

Sunderland, who appointed a new manager in Jack Ross last month, have added six new faces since the end of last season.

Goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin, defenders Alim Öztürk, Tom Flanagan and Reece James, midfielder Dylan McGeouch and forward Chris Maguire have all arrived at the Stadium of Light.

Joel Asoro of Sunderland arrives ahead of the Sky Bet Championship match between QPR and Sunderland at Loftus Road on March 10, 2018 in London, England.

And centre-forward could be Sunderland’s next port of call amid reports that Joel Asoro is on his way to Swansea City.

Asoro’s exit would leave only Josh Maja, Duncan Watmore and Maguire as recognised front men, although neither player is renowned for their goalscoring prowess.
