Newcastle United are in the Premier League, while Sunderland are in League One at the moment.

Stewart Donald has explained on social networking site Twitter why he bought Sunderland instead of Newcastle United.
Donald bought Sunderland in the summer of 2018, and the businessman has explained why he did not purchase Newcastle from Mike Ashley instead.
The Englishman has also said that there is a good opportunity for any businessman looking to buy Newcastle.
Stewart replied to the above post on Twitter: “I just wanted the biggest club in the North East so it was only ever going to be @SunderlandAFC. Simples!!!”
The Sunderland owner added: “Serious answer is that the two clubs present different opportunities currently. The entry price for Newcastle is too high for me anyway.
“Sure it is a good opportunity if MA wants to sell. North East passion for football is the strongest anywhere – fantastic region.”
Stewart replied to the above posts: “Yes. Bit more to it but essentially right. You could buy Newcastle and spend a lot and still not deliver for the fans. Whereas at Sunderland you are more likely for less outlay to improve the club.”

Newcastle United and Sunderland situation
Sunderland are going strong in League One at the moment, and there is an air of optimism around the Stadium of Light.
However, it cannot be overlooked that the it is a massive disappointment for the Black Cats that they are now in the third tier of English football.
Sunderland will be determined to win automatic promotion back to the Championship at the end of the season.
As for Newcastle, the Magpies are struggling in the Premier League and could get relegated to the second tier of English football at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
Newcastle have suffered from lack of investment in the squad, and it is going to be hard for manager Rafael Benitez to keep the team in the Premier League.
