
Some Aston Villa fans are a bit miffed after The Athletic reported Steven Gerrard almost picked Ashley Young to start as Aston Villa’s number 10 at the weekend.
Gerrard took charge of his first game for Villa against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend. And, while he didn’t spring too many surprises in his starting XI, he almost picked Young as an attacking midfielder.
Villa fans seem surprised by this report and, to be honest, we can understand why.
Young, according to Transfermarkt, hasn’t played as a number 10 for more than a decade and, at the age of 36, it’s hard to imagine him standing out in that position.
Villa fans thought Gerrard picking Young as a number 10 would have been a backwards step, with a couple of fans claiming it was the type of move Steve Bruce would have made at the club.
Gerrard seemingly hasn’t built enough good faith with the fanbase and they’re already questioning some of his thought processes.
