Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have built up a head of steam since losing to Celtic.
Steven Thomson has told BBC Sport Scotland that Rangers’ form is simply “superb” at the moment.
Rangers go into Sunday’s League Cup semi-final with Motherwell at Hampden Park on the back of a two-match winning streak after thumping St Johnstone 3-0 on Friday.
Pedro Caixinha’s side have scored 10 goals in their last four games in all competitions and the Gers will be big favourites to reach the final come Sunday.
But the Ibrox side have also had some poor results too and their performance in the 2-0 Old Firm derby defeat by Celtic last month is a cause for concern.
It seems like Caixinha’s troops are prone to a terrible display just when things seem to be on the up, resulting in speculation his future at Ibrox.
And former Rangers striker Thomson tells BBC Sport Scotland that their last-four clash with Motherwell is “huge” for the Portuguese manager.
“Certainly a great result on Friday night and I think the reaction of the side since losing the Old Firm game has been superb. Two tricky away games, won them both, scored seven, conceded one and got another clean sheet on Friday night, their second of the season.
“This game at the weekend, for me, is pivotal for Caixinha. The reasons are, the pressure mounted on him earlier in the season, out of Europe, not good enough, home defeat to Hibernian, not good enough, lost the Old Firm game comfortably, not good enough.
“Then there have been moments of positivity and he has managed to build up a wee bit of positivity over these two games. But how many more times is he going to get a strike? If he loses on Sunday in the semi-final, that’s another strike against his name.
“This game at the weekend is huge for Caixinha.”
