Steven Gerrard’s Rangers have started the season well in their quest to bring silverware to Ibrox.

The former Ibrox striker has been involved in two very tight title races as a player in the past, first in 2003 and then in 2005.
Reminiscing about those occasions and in particular the dramatic ‘Helicopter Sunday’ match, Thompson thinks the way this season is developing means that kind of blockbuster end to the season can happen again.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Sportscene pundit said: “The way things are going this season, I wouldn’t be surprised if it went down to the wire again.
“That seems to be the way it’s panning out. Both Rangers and Celtic look like they are going to be neck and neck between now and next May.”
“We could be heading towards another amazing end to the season, which would be fantastic for everyone.”
Can Rangers maintain their form?
So far Gerrard’s team have coped with the demands of multiple competitions well. In the games following European matches they’ve not put a foot wrong.
If they can continue that to the derby at the turn of the year then they’ll be in good shape for the Celtic Park clash. However, if Thompson is right about the league going to the wire though, then derby matches might well determine who ends up with the trophy.
In recent seasons that’s where Rangers have fallen short. At Celtic Park in particularly they’ve been on the receiving end of many defeats. The win for Neil Lennon’s side at Ibrox earlier this season showed that Rangers still have a lot of work to do if they want to steal the Hoops’ crown.
That’s why matches like Sunday’s at Tynecastle are so important. They need to mop up against bottom six sides or risk another hard-to-take league season.
