Graeme Murty’s Rangers will take on Old Firm rivals Celtic at Hampden Park in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup on Sunday afternoon.
Former Rangers striker Thompson, who was on the books of the Ibrox club from 2003 until 2006, has predicted Brendan Rodgers’s side to pick up all three points from the encounter against the Gers.
Thompson told BBC Sportscene Extra Facebook Live: “A Celtic win is my prediction, which I think is a bit boring and a bit kind of obvious and expected.”
Celtic are favourites
Celtic have the best squad in Scotland, and the Hoops will head into the Old Firm derby against Rangers as favourites.
The Hoops have the best attacking unit in Scotland, and they should score at least once against the Gers.
However, Rangers’ chances of winning the Scottish Cup semi-final tie cannot be written off just yet.
After all, Murty’s side did give Celtic a run for their money at Ibrox last month during the two sides’ Scottish Premiership match.
Graeme Murty’s future
The future of Murty as the Rangers manager could depend on the result of the Scottish Cup semi-final tie against Celtic.
If the Gers fail to compete with the Hoops and lose by a big margin, then Rangers chairman Dave King could well decide to find someone else to lead the line against Celtic.
Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has given his take on the future of Murty, and wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times: “Put it this way, I would be very surprised if Graeme is the manager next season. I am not saying he definitely won’t be, but I would be surprised.”
