Steven Gerrard’s Rangers played out a 2-2 draw with Villarreal away from home at El Madrigal in Europa League Group G on Thursday evening.
Dorrans did not start the match, but the 31-year-old midfielder came on as a substitute in the 85th minute.
The Scotland international was playing his first game for Rangers this season after recovering from a knee injury.
The performance of the former West Bromwich Albion midfielder – who joined Rangers from Norwich City in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee reported by The Scottish Sun to be worth £1.5 million – impressed former Rangers striker Thompson, who was on the books of the Ibrox club from 2003 until 2006.
Thompson told BBC Sport (19:43) forwards the end of the match: “That’s top-drawer from Dorrans. Rangers have been missing him – a player who can unlock the door from the number 10 position.
“He drives forward, skins one defender and plays in Arfield. The challenge coming in really puts Arfield off just as it looks like he’s going to finish.”
Quality footballer
Dorrans is a very good midfielder who is going to be an asset for Rangers as the season progresses.
While it is going to be hard for the former West Brom midfielder to establish himself in Gerrard’s starting lineup anytime soon, he is a good option to have on the substitutes’ bench, and one suspects that Rangers manager Gerrard will be pleased to see him back in action.
