Glasgow Rangers man Mark Allen deserves the bulk of credit for bringing Allan McGregor back to Ibrox.

Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson told BBC Sport on Thursday that Allan McGregor is Steven Gerrard’s best signing at Ibrox.
The 36-year-old posted yet another masterclass in goalkeeping as Rangers earned a vital point in their bid to reach the knockout phase of the Europa League by drawing 0-0 with Villarreal in Glasgow.
Thompson, who claimed that McGregor was ‘Gerrard’s best signing’, said to BBC Sport: “You can’t underestimate just how important McGregor has been. Not only on Thursday, but over the course of the season.
“I think what he’s bringing now is a level of performance virtually every week. He’s bringing his experience to the side and he absolutely loves playing for Rangers.”
Thompson is spot-on in saying that McGregor is Rangers’ best signing of the summer transfer window.
Very few would disagree with those sentiments, but he is giving the wrong man credit.
It was Director of Football Mark Allen who brought the veteran Scot back to Ibrox, not Gerrard.
The Gers manager told The Record back in August that he ‘can’t take any credit for the signing of Allan McGregor’ and added that it was 99 percent finalised by the time he arrived as Graeme Murty’s successor back in May.

The 38-year-old signed off on the transfer, but it was Allen who did the heavy lifting as it were, the recruiting, and that shouldn’t be forgotten.
Allen has taken his fair share of criticism since arriving in Scotland after a number of Rangers signings flopped – most notably the Mexican lads, including Pedro Caixinha.
If he gets pelted when things go wrong, it’s only fair that he gets credit when things go right – and the decision to re-sign McGregor, for free, is looking more and more inspired with each passing week.
