Celtic face Motherwell for a third time in a row on Saturday.
Celtic face Motherwell for a third time in six days on Saturday at Celtic Park, with Stephen Robinson’s side coming within a whisker of ending the record-run before Callum McGregor won a penalty in the 88th minute.
The decision by Willie Collum to award a penalty, which was dispatched by Scott Sinclair to earn a 1-1 draw, came just days after Sinclair was adjudged to have dived and in turn deceive Betfred Cup final referee Craig Thomson to win a penalty.
Thompson believes Sunday’s penalty was the wrong call, but Wednesday night’s decision was much more of a penalty shout than the previous one. He also stated that Celtic’s run, which stands at 66 games, will end this term.
“I still think it [McGregor’s penalty] is soft,” Thompson said. “Despite the other angle, it’s a 50-50 and yes you have seen them given, but I think Sunday’s penalty was so incredibly soft – not a penalty in my opinion – leading into this game.
“Motherwell are about to do the unthinkable, and stop this unbeaten run – two minutes away and it is contentious. Is it enough to warrant enough a penalty kick? It’s a bigger shout than the Sinclair one. If you’re Motherwell, you must be absolutely spewing.
“It was Celtic’s first penalty in the league, it evens itself out. I don’t think they will go unbeaten, they have already dropped as many points as they did last season. That tells me they have not performed as well last season.”
Motherwell travel to Parkhead on Saturday as they look to exact revenge on Celtic following the two controversial outings that have seen The Well frustrated by the officials decisions in both matches.
The likes of Louis Moult, Chris Cadden and Ryan Bowman will be looking to finally end Celtic’s run in their own backyard, but Celtic are expected to continue their dominance north of the border with three points.
