Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers hired Steven Gerrard on Thursday.
Steven Thompson has told Herald Scotland that Steven Gerrard could use his “unbelievable contacts” to bring big players to Rangers this summer.
The Liverpool icon was named as Graeme Murty’s successor at Ibrox today, signing a four-year deal.
The move has raised eyebrows in questions due to Gerrard’s lack of experience, with his only other job being a coach of the Reds’ youth team.
Nevertheless, the 37-year-old, a Champions League winner in 2005, will certainly help to raise Rangers’ profile due to his own star status and standing within the game.
And BBC pundit Thompson believes that such an appointment can only help Rangers on the recruitment front.
“Recruitment of course will be key, and how much leeway he will have to bring in players will obviously depend on shifting some of the deadwood out the door, but I would imagine that Gerrard will have unbelievable contacts within the game,” he told Herald Scotland.
“There is no doubt at all that he will be a major draw for young players in particular, because if Steven Gerrard calls you directly and asks you to play for him, as a player that would be a hard thing to turn down.”
Indeed, recruitment will be key and it’ll be interesting to see if Gerrard or Director of Football Mark Allen is the man behind the transfers.
Whoever it is, they have to get it spot-on. The Ibrox side remain quite a distance behind their Old Firm rivals Celtic, who are three Scottish Premiership titles away from winning 10 in a row.
Gerrard is now the man charged with the task of stopping Brendan Rodgers’s side, and without the players, he is doomed.
