Rangers suffered a 1-0 loss to Aberdeen on Wednesday night at Ibrox.
Steven Thompson has slammed Rangers defender Connor Goldson in his analysis on BBC Sportscene, suggesting that centre-back was sloppy when in possession during Wednesday night’s loss to Aberdeen.
Scott McKenna scored an excellent early goal, volleying home a loose ball in the Rangers penalty area after Graeme Shinnie delivered a dangerous cross from a free-kick. The score remained the same for the entire match.
Sam Cosgrove and Alfredo Morelos were both sent off in a feisty affair that saw Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis produce excellent saves to deny Kyle Lafferty, Ryan Jack, Glenn Middleton and indeed Morelos.
Former Rangers striker chose to criticise a surprise player in Goldson, as the £3.5million (Scottish Sun) summer signing from Brighton partnered veteran Gareth McAuley at centre-back.
“More often than not, it was Goldson in possession of the ball. Can he not just drive forward? He has plenty of space, take the ball forward 10 yards,” Thompson said.
“He always looks for too hard a pass, there were lots of these. Or, he takes the easy option, never takes responsibility on the ball. It was slack.”
Goldson has been applauded all season for his performances, becoming a mainstay in Gerrard’s side. Indeed, the likes of Nikola Katic, Joe Worrall and McAuley have been fighting to play alongside the ex-Brighton star.
The loss comes as a missed opportunity for the Gers, after Old Firm rivals Celtic only managed to draw against Motherwell at Fir Park 1-1 – meaning a win would have seen them go three points clear of Brendan Rodgers’ men.
Instead, they sit level on points with Celtic – ahead on goal difference, though Celtic have a game in hand. Kilmarnock are sitting pretty at the top of the table after beating Livingston 2-0, thanks to a brace from Greg Stewart.
