Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has told talkSPORT that Mike Ashley needs to to invest in the squad to ensure they do not find themselves in another relegation battle.
Newcastle United defeated West Ham United 2-0 on the final day of the Premier League season in order to retain their top-flight status, but supporters and squad members are unhappy with the club’s lack of progress in recent years and put it down to minimum investment from club owner Mike Ashley.
Prior to the game that could have seen the Magpies relegated to the Championship, Ashley gave a surprising interview to Sky Sports and indicated that he would not sell the club until they win a trophy.
Ultimately, it has been a controversial ownership and fans have not been happy under Ashley’s control.
Steven Taylor believes that Newcastle should be challenging for a place in Europe and has called for Ashley to reach into his pocket.
“Everybody knows we need to add some top quality players,” Taylor told talkSPORT. “It’s great for Mike Ashley to come out before the game yesterday and say what he said, but I do believe, and I think a lot of the lads will say the same, he should invest big in the club in the summer.
“A lot of people have been saying we should be in Europe and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be. The top six, top seven is what we’ve got to be aiming for. And there’s no reason why we can’t.”
It could also be worth noting that Ashley and fans need to show patience with the club’s next manager. John Carver was only short-term and they can be happy about that, but whoever gets the nod for next season needs years, not months, to get things right.
Sunderland are similar in terms of going through more managers than hot dinners. It must be something in the air up in the North-East.
