Steven Pressley has told Carlisle United’s official Youtube channel that Newcastle United loan manager Shola Ameobi was impressed with the improvement that he saw in Elias Sorensen last night.

Sorensen has struggled since leaving Newcastle for Carlisle in the summer, with the striker barely getting any game time on his loan spell to date.

However, the Newcastle loanee was picked to lead the line last night, as Carlisle won in the EFL Cup.

And Sorensen impressed, as the Cumbrians beat their higher league opponents, Blackpool, 2-1.

The youngster worked tirelessly for his side, with Carlisle boss Pressley delighted with the way that the Newcastle prospect played.

“I was really pleased with the improvements in some of our players,” he said.

“I just spoke with Shola Ameobi regarding Elias. He has just called me, and that’s the hardest he’s ever seen him work.

“He worked tirelessly tonight, and that’s real improvement in the kid since he’s come in here. I’ve had a couple of good conversations with him.

“I’ve spoken to him about a number of things. For me, his response has been excellent. So that was really encouraging.”

Newcastle fans will be hoping that Sorensen has now managed to gain the trust of Pressley, as he searches for more game time.

Concerns were rising that Sorensen’s temporary spell away from Newcastle was doing little for his development, due to his lack of action.

But Sorensen may just have done enough to have forced his way into contention for a starting place in Carlisle’s first-team now.

Pressley’s side’s next league match comes against Plymouth Argyle at the weekend.
