Former Coventry City manager Steven Pressley has told Herald Scotland that wonder kid James Maddison could have joined Arsenal or Liverpool.

The youngster caught the headlines recently as he scored a stunning last minute free-kick for Aberdeen in the win over Rangers.

He is currently on loan at the Scottish side from Championship club Norwich City, who he joined from Coventry City in the January transfer window.

He has previously starred for the Sky Blues, so much so that there was talk of Premier League interest in his services.

And his former managed has revealed to the Scottish Herald that Arsenal and Liverpool were particularly close to securing his signature.

“There was a lot of interest in him long before he went to Norwich this year,” Pressley told Herald Scotland.

“He picked up an unfortunate ankle injury just when a number of clubs were ready to pounce last year. Big clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool were in advanced stages of recruitment with him.”

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal and Liverpool end up regretting their failure to secure Maddison.

So far he has shown his quality while on loan at Aberdeen, with that super strike against Rangers his second in three games.

If he continues that fine form and shows more moment on magic like the one that won the game against Mark Warburton’s side, the Premier League duo could well be looking back with some regret, or even looking to correct their mistake.
