Steven Pienaar has backed Everton’s reported pursuit of free agent Bernard by responding to an Everton fan on Twitter, describing the Brazilian playmaker as a “great player”.

The Guardian have reported that 25-year-old Bernard is closing in on a move to Goodison Park with a medical scheduled for Tuesday, which sees The Toffees beat a number of clubs to Bernard’s signature.

West Ham were reportedly keen earlier in the window, but Bernard turned a move to the London Stadium down. The Guardian’s report claims that Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea were put off by Bernard’s £200,000-a-week demands.

Asked whether he would be a good signing for Everton, former Toffees star and Everton club ambassador Pienaar backed the signing of Bernard – who will become the club’s third summer signing behind Lucas Digne and Richarlison.

Bernard’s contract at Ukranian giants Shakhtar Donetsk expired at the end of last season, after scoring 10 goals and creating four more in 29 league and cup outings. His desire for a move, though, saw him reject Shakhtar’s contract offers.

Now, he is expected to move to Goodison Park, where he will team up with Brazilian Richarlison, who become Marco Silva’s first signing as Toffees manager for a huge £50million.

Everton are first in action against newly-promoted Wolves on Saturday afternoon at Molineux.
