Steven Naismith comments on Phil Jagielka to Celtic speculation

Celtic reportedly want Phil Jagielka, who is leaving Everton.

Former Rangers star Steven Naismith has suggested to The Herald that departing Everton defender Phil Jagielka will not join Celtic in the summer transfer window.

Naismith, who played for Celtic’s bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers from 2007 until 2012 and is a former teammate of Jagielka at Everton, has said that he would be surprised if the 36-year-old central defender moved to the Hoops this summer.

The former Sheffield United central defender is leaving Everton this summer and is available on a free transfer.

According to The Scottish Sun, Neil Lennon’s Celtic are interested in securing the services of the Englishman.

The report has claimed that the Glasgow giants wanted to bring Jagielka to Celtic Park in January as well.

Naismith told The Herald about Jagielka: “When I saw he was leaving Everton my first thought was where he’ll go. I can’t see him finishing because he has a lot to offer and loves football.

“Will that be in Scotland? I would be surprised if he came up here. He’s got more association with different clubs down south, like Sheffield United where he came through, and he has a family with kids who are going through school. So with all those thoughts to consider I’d be surprised if he comes to Scotland.”

Good signing for Celtic?

Jagielka is past his prime, but the Englishman still has a couple of years left in him.

The 36-year-old will add experience to the current Celtic backline, and he will also help the younger players in the squad.
