Rangers fans must be relishing the prospect of watching their team under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and competing with Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.

The Gers have finished third in the Scottish Premiership for the past two seasons, and the Ibrox fans must be disappointed that the Gers could not give Celtic a run for their money since their return to the top flight.

With former Liverpool and England international midfielder now in charge of Rangers, the fans will expect the team to at least push Celtic.

However, Gerrard’s comments suggest that the Gers may not find it easy, and has urged the Rangers faithful against getting carried away.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Gerrard told Rangers’ official website about the fans: “I know they are craving success, but it is going to take time, there are going to be stages and there is going to be a bit of turbulence along the way, but there is no doubt about it, they have a person in charge who is going to try and lead that and is as hungry as them.

“I hope they can bounce off me and I can bounce off them, and together, we can move this club forward, that is my only concern at this moment.”

Steven Gerrard shakes hands with Dave King as he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Realistic comments

Gerrard’s comments are very realistic, and indeed given that this is first managerial job, there will be ups and downs next season.

What is important is that Rangers get the recruitment right in the summer transfer window and then make a strong start to the 2018-19 campaign.

If Rangers win matches in the opening weeks of the season, then it will lift the crowd and increase optimistic at Ibrox, and will also put pressure on Celtic.
