Newcastle United lost at Anfield in the Premier League at the weekend.

Following Newcastle United’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool away from home at Anfield in the Premier League this past Saturday evening, Steven Gerrard gave his damning verdict on the Magpies’ midfield.
Speaking on BT Sport 1 during the post-match coverage of the match (7:41pm, Saturday, March 3, 2018), the Liverpool legend said: “For me, it’s a Championship midfield.”

Harsh but true
Gerrard’s comments may seem harsh, but most Newcastle fans will agree that the Liverpool legend is right.
There are some very good players in the current Magpies’ team, such as Jamaal Lascelles and Martin Dubravka, but overall, the side are not great.
With Jonjo Shelvey missing the match against Liverpool due to injury, Rafael Benitez’s side lacked creativity in midfield and failed to ask questions of the Reds’ defence.

The likes of Mikel Merino, Mohamed Diame and Christian Atsu are decent footballers, but there is a reason why they are playing for a relegation-threatened team – because they are not good enough to play for a top club.
It is going to be hard for Newcastle to avoid relegation to the Championship at the end of the season, but the St. James’ Park faithful should be optimistic.
