Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told The Scottish Sun that fans shouldn’t point fingers of blame at goalkeeper Wes Foderingham after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock.

The Gers were desperate for a response having lost 1-0 to Aberdeen in the semi-finals of the Betfred Cup on Sunday, with Gerrard urging his players to step up.

It all started so well for Rangers against Kilmarnock, as striker Alfredo Morelos put the Gers in front, showing just how much they missed the Colombian on Sunday.

However, Greg Stewart – a former Rangers youngster – hit the equaliser for Kilmarnock, and Rangers couldn’t find a winner as they had to settle for a draw.

Last night marked a third disappointing performance in a row, following the 0-0 draw with Spartak Moscow and 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen, with Gerrard’s great start now under threat.

Gerrard made one shock decision on Wednesday night, dropping Allan McGregor to the bench in order to start Wes Foderingham, with the Englishman making a first league start of the season.

Some criticised Foderingham’s display, but Gerrard has urged fans not to blame Foderingham, claiming that he actually prevented Rangers from losing last night.

Gerrard noted that McGregor has been suffering with a ‘small problem on the right side of his back’, explaining why he decided to leave the Rangers stopper out last night.

“Wes stopped us from actually dropping three points with a terrific save at the end,” said Gerrard. “Allan has had a small problem on the right side of his back, probably not enough to keep him out but a flag, if you like, to me about his age and the amount of games we are going to play over the course of the season.

“But there are no fingers to be pointed at Wes. He could have done nothing at the first goal where we didn’t defend well enough. We were soft, missed the header and let a left-footer come back on his strong foot. There are other people to point fingers at for that goal. Because of Wes, we didn’t lose the game at the very end,” he added.
