Liverpool need to sign a player in the mould of Tottenham Hotspur ace Victor Wanyama, according to Steven Gerrard.
When speaking exclusively to BT Sport on Wednesday night, Reds legend Steven Gerrard urged his former club to sign a ‘monster central midfielder’ in the summer, if they want to go on and make a real challenge for major honours on all fronts over the course of the next few years.
Liverpool have been mightily impressive so far this season, especially with their lightening quick attacking play, but their defensive frailties have proven to be detrimental to their hopes of making a sustained push for the Premier League title.
Jürgen Klopp spent £75 million on Virgil van Dijk last month, but it is still clearly evident that the Merseyside outfit need further investment, if they are to make a real push for major honours over the upcoming years.
Gerrard, who made 701 appearances for the Reds, urged his former club to go out and buy a strong holding midfielder in the summer, when speaking exclusively to BT Sport on Wednesday night:
“I think Liverpool would benefit from a monster of a centre-midfielder. A holder, a Victor Wanyama type player who does sit in there and is disciplined. He would give more protection to the back four.”
Liverpool are all but through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and currently sit in third position in the Premier League table, so they are still in a great position to achieve success this season.
They are by far from the finished article, but if Klopp follows Gerrard’s advice, and brings in a Wanyama-type player this summer, they could be an even stronger prospect next season.
