The former Liverpool skipper has offered his backing to the current Reds captain.
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has urged Jordan Henderson’s critics to not compare him to other players, while speaking to Radio City Talk.
The midfielder has shown improvement over the last year and he has steadily developed into a key man under manager Jurgen Klopp.
Henderson has been in good form at the beginning of this season, helping his side up to fourth in the table after seven games of the campaign.
Unfortunately, the critics are still there, with some believing he is not good enough to lead the Reds midfield.
Most of the criticism comes from people who compare him to Gerrard, but the latter believes Henderson should be rated on his own ability.
“I think criticism happens a lot in football, I’ve had it myself. It’s all about different eras,” he told Radio City Talk.
“We see players described as the next Paul Gascoigne, the next Bobby Moore. People have got to judge Jordan Henderson for Jordan Henderson. What does he give to the team, what does he give to his team-mates around him?”
A look at the stats certainly shows that criticism of Henderson is somewhat unwarranted.
So far this season he is the club’s best passer by far with an average of 75 accurate passes per game, while he has also registered the second most successful passes in the final.
He is also in the top six for key passes, ahead of the likes of Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane.
Those are impressive numbers and perhaps it is time for critics to rate him on what he does bring to the side rather than what he does not.
