Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks fans have given defender Connor Goldson too much criticism over the years.

Goldson became one of Gerrard’s first signings at Rangers back in 2018, with the Gers paying £3million to sign him from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The centre back has now racked up almost 150 appearances for Rangers, and hasn’t missed a single game this season.

Goldson has racked up eight goals this season too, enjoying a fine campaign as an undroppable part of Gerrard’s remarkable back line.

Rangers have only conceded nine league goals this season, and Goldson has been a huge part of that no matter who his centre back partner has been.

Fans have appreciated Goldson’s contributions this season, but it hasn’t always been that way, with supporters often criticising him in the past.

Gerrard has now admitted that he thinks fans have been harsh on Goldson over the years, believing he has received undeserved stick.

Gerrard added that Goldson has been ‘an absolute mountain’ and ‘immense’ this season, heaping praise on the 28-year-old as he nears three years at Ibrox.

“Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a true warrior,” said Gerrard. “He’s had a lot of stick over the years, wrongly in my opinion. But he’s continued to improve and has been one of our most consistent players. I wasn’t too happy with the back line in Belgium on Thursday but if you look at the big picture, Goldson has been absolutely immense.”

“I can’t describe to you how well he has done for this team, not just in terms of what you have seen, but in terms of leadership on the inside and his availability every day. He has standards, both personally and pushing other people to improve their standards. Connor is a proper leader and I am made up for him,” he added.
