Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks Joe Aribo could be a ‘major’ player this season.
The Gers were in pre-season action again on Saturday afternoon, hosting Coventry City at Ibrox having beaten Motherwell in midweek.
Aribo put Rangers ahead against Coventry, producing a fine driving run before finishing low into the corner of the net from a one-two with Alfredo Morelos.
Connor Goldson added a second, heading home James Tavernier’s free kick to seal a 2-0 victory.
Rangers look to be in a great place ahead of the new season, and no player embodies that idea quite like Aribo.
The midfielder – who joined from Charlton Athletic last summer – has been exceptional in pre-season, earning huge praise from fans.
Gerrard has now joined in, suggesting that Aribo has come back for pre-season in a ‘fantastic place’, believing he is fitter and more focused than ever before.
Gerrard has called on him to take his pre-season displays into the new season, believing he can be a ‘major help’ to the Gers, no matter what position he is playing.
“Wherever we play Joe he always tries to make things happen,” said Gerrard. “He’s come back in a fantastic place. He’s come back fitter, he’s come back focused and all I ask is that he takes his pre-season performances into the season because if he does, he’s going to be a major help for us.”
“He gives us more creation in midfield by dropping down a line. But he’s more than capable of playing anywhere you put him as he’s so talented,” he added.
