Rangers have been back in pre-season training for a couple of weeks now.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told the club’s official website that his players are further ahead in their preparations than he expected.

The Gers didn’t get much of a rest following the end of the season, as they returned to pre-season training two weeks ago to gear up for the new season.

With Gerrard and co facing another gruelling Europa League qualification campaign this summer, Rangers have to be prepared, and will hope to progress all the way, just as they did last year.

They will face either Prishtina of Kosovo or St. Joseph’s of Gibraltar, and if it’s the latter, Rangers would remarkably have to to play their first game next Tuesday.

That’s far from ideal, even if it’s only two days difference, but Gerrard currently has his players out in Portugal working hard to get their fitness levels up.

Gerrard has now admitted that the Rangers players are applying themselves well in training, and are actually slightly ahead of where Gerrard expected them to be right now, showing that they’ve surprised the Gers boss at this early stage of the summer.

Gerrard believes that the quality in training is getting better and better, but he’s still planning to add a few more signings to his squad before the transfer window is done next month.

“It has been a fantastic week and the boys have applied themselves very well and we are probably slightly ahead of where I thought we would be right now,” said Gerrard. “It has been two strong weeks. I missed a few days of the first week as I was on a course, but I watched the sessions back and the first week was strong.”

“Again, they have raised the bar and they have put in more distance this week and the quality is getting better while we are adding quality to it and a few more signings will come through the door,” he added.
