Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has suggested to The Scottish Sun that he would like Ibrox legend Walter Smith to play some sort of a role at the Gers.

Smith managed Rangers from 1991 until 1998 and from 2007 until 2011, wining the Scottish league title a total of 10 times, the Scottish Cup five times, and the Scottish League Cup on six occasions.

Liverpool legend Gerrard, who was appointed the Rangers boss earlier this summer, has spoken of his desire to have Ibrox great Smith at the Gers in some role.

The former England international midfielder has also jokingly said that Celtic and Liverpool great Kenny Dalglish will not answer his call if he needs any advice.

Gerrard worked under former Scotland international forward Dalglish when the latter was in charge of Liverpool in 2011-12.

“I haven’t really thought about it in terms of roles or at what level we want to use him,” Gerrard told The Scottish Sun about Smith.

“I think we just want to get him round the table and have a chat with him — get his thoughts and his experience, how he saw last year and get some advice.”

Gerrard jokingly added about Dalglish: “Kenny is my hero, if you are a young boy and you grow up in Liverpool, Kenny Dalglish is the man.

“I know he is a Celtic man but we are friends and Kenny is that type of man. He is a real football man.

“He has given me many bits of advice over the years. Our relationship is very strong although he will probably let the phone ring out now!”

Managing Rangers

The Rangers job is Gerrard’s first senior managerial role, and the Liverpool great could do with advice from legends such as Smith and Dalglish.

Gerrard has been quite busy already in the summer transfer window and have signed a number of players, including Connor Goldson and Jon Flanagan.
