Glasgow Rangers picked up an impressive win, but it was a somewhat mixed night for the side from Ibrox.
Steven Gerrard has suggested, in comments reported by the Daily Record, that people in England told him that they absolutely loved watching Rangers’s recent win against Aberdeen, with the battle between Gers star Alfredo Morelos and Scott McKenna receiving particular praise from the Ibrox boss.
Rangers picked up a 4-2 win at Pittodrie on a night which saw the best and worst aspects of Morelos’s game come to the fore. In front of goal, the Colombian was sensational.
His first goal saw Morelos rewarded for peeling off towards the back post as Ryan Kent’s effort was parried straight into his path. His second was a superb piece of finishing as he guided the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Morelos’s night was to end early however, as a clash with McKenna saw both men sent off. They had been battling throughout the game, but the referee decided that he had seen enough when they both raised their boots towards each other.
At the time, Rangers were 3-2 ahead. And the two dismissals seemed to have less of an impact on Aberdeen as they pushed for an equaliser. But Jermain Defoe provided a brilliant finish in stoppage-time to wrap the points up.
Many of the headlines since that game have centred around the retrospective action that has been taken against Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor and the ban handed out to Morelos. But Gerrard suggested that it is the kind of game that Scottish football should have been proud of and relished rather than one that led to subsequent punishments.
“Our game at Aberdeen the other week had everything,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record. “A top centre-back in Scott McKenna was going to war with a top centre-forward in Alfredo Morelos.
“It was fascinating to watch and under the Pittodrie lights it was an unbelievable game. I know people in England who watched it and the feedback was they absolutely loved it.
“It can be a bit of a soap opera up here at times but it’s the same in England. What we should all strive for is to talk about the football and the players we have here.
“We’re lucky that we get to sample that McKenna v Morelos battle. We should enjoy it, rather than talk about how many games they’re going to miss.”
